Field-Tested Pack Goats for Sale
Each year we retain a few wethers from our kid crop for backcountry field testing. This rigorous, wilderness field testing at ~18 months allows us to evaluate breedings and actively select goats that reliably produce kids with the qualities that our breeding program emphasizes. Although we would love to keep every goat that excels in its field trials, we simply can't. If you are interested in jump-starting your pack string with field tested pack goats that already have basic training, these 18-24 month old goats may be for you. If you prefer to start from scratch, reserve your kids that benefit from our proven field-trial-based breeding program.
What is a field-tested prospect?
At approximately 18 months, prospects complete a multi-day wilderness field trial carrying a pack saddle and less than 10 pounds. We evaluate agility, endurance, temperament, intelligence, and willingness/ability to travel through challenging off-trail terrain. These trials evaluate backcountry aptitude rather than mature load-carrying capacity. Goats offered here have successfully completed that evaluation and received basic pack-goat training.
